Description part summary
A phoenix-headed ewer, the head sharply sculpted and placed horizontally at the top of a tall four-ringed slender neck, the head surmounted by a small petalled mouth, the body decorated with two bands of overlapping petals down from the shoulder and up from the base, the whole covered by a shiny white glaze of ivory tint with numerous ferruginous brown spots on the raised shoulder and phoenix head and streaks down the centre of the upper band of petals.

A similar Southern white ewer in the British Museum has been exhaustively discussed. According to Sato general book on Chinese ceramics chapter 18 only 7 or 8 pieces of this type are known and no specific kiln has been credited with the production of this rare group.
