The base and body are carved from wood. They are painted black with red and yellow decoration. The antlers appear to be real antlers with most of the surface removed. These are also black with painted decoration. The body has a projection that fits into a socket in the base. There are two sockets in the top of the body section which the antlers fit into.
Description part summary
Wood based black lacquer guardian figure (4 pieces fitting together) with 4-pronged antlers and small pendulent tongue issuing from a small stylised squared head without lower jaw with circles in high relief for the eyes and curls for the ears; the square base into which the figure fits is relief carved in geometric designs painted in outline using vermillion; traces of patterns in red and vermillion pigments overall
Description material
wood, antlers, lacquer
Description condition
The right hand side antler fell off in 2015 due to distortion around the socket it fits into and it was conserved by Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre. Exposing the object to excessive heat could cause the adhesive and filler to soften.
