Description part summary

A moulded bowl with a white glaze of Ding type, the exterior plain with typical Ding teardrops; the interior with a spirally carved flower in the centre, the cavetto with precious emblems such as coral and rhino horn, four small boys with ribbons and moths amid floral sprays of probably peonies and daisies; two of the sprays tied up with ribbons. The glazed rim has a narrow, almost continuous, band of cloud scrolls; the base is unglazed with sand adhering to it; no spur marks; probably from a Ding kiln when under Liao control. The cloud scrolls round the rim and the moths are typical Liao motifs and the glazing of the rims and no spur marks are indicative of the bowl being fired individually in a sagger, in contrast to the later multiple firing of bowls in stepped saggars when the rims remain unglazed or with an unglazed staking ring in the interior.
