Description part summary
A tall Cizhou-type meiping vase of characteristic chicken-leg shape with narrow base and conical mouth, the body carved in sgraffito technique with three horizontal bands, the top broad, horizontal band with three large lotus blooms and foliage framed by carved double lines above and below the band. Next a narrow band of incised classic scroll similarly bordered, the remaining broad band of erect overlapping lotus petals between double incised borders. The whole vase is covered with a thick dark brown glaze carved through the white slip to the putty-coloured body, which is scraped to form the background.

Cizhou-type pieces were made at that period in many parts of China, principally in the north and northwest. Cizhou pieces similar to this example were popular products in the then quasi-independent kingdom of Western Xia, and this example was probably produced in that kingdom during the period indicated.
