Description part summary
A ritual bronze cauldron (ding) with upright loop handles supported on three plain cylindrical legs and set on the flanged rim, the three lobes each cast with a large and elaborate taotie maks, whose two large hooked horns flank a crest rising from its ridged nose, the jaws with tight hooks, the eyebrows hatched and the eyes in higher relief, all on a ground of leiwen flanked by much simplified descending dragons, the patina a smooth grey-green and with areas of green and azurite encrustations.

A virtually identical vessel has been found at the early Western Zhou site of Liulihe near Beijing where the inscribed bronzes mention the installation of the nephew of the first king of Zhou as Prince of Yan.
