Description part summary
An Yixing stoneware teapot of traditional shape. The clay is of brick-red colour with well patinated orange skin finish. The spout is slightly curved at the end, the level of the spout, mouth and handle are all level. There is no inside filter. The base has a 7 character kai-shu inscription (He Sui? chang bao yigong), by famous potter Hui Yigong.

Yixing is an area on the shore of Lake Tai in Jiangsu province famous for its production of unglazed brown, red and buff pottery tea wares. The variation of colour withing these wares was derived from the local zisha (purple sand) clay. Production began in the 16th c AD and expanded greatly in the 18th and 19th centuries. They became highly regarded as an aesthetic compliment to tea. Yixing wares are interesting in that they are one of the few Chinese ceramics to be commonly signed by their maker. AL.
