A Swatow bulb bowl with three stout plain legs covered (other than the base and interior) with a blue glaze of dark cloudy colour with three qilins alternating with flaming pearls in white slip with incised details. The base has a six character Wanli mark in underglaze blue under white glaze and the piece is of the period.

six character Wanli mark in underglaze blue. Note: This type of white slip decorated Swatow is normally unmarked. This is the only marked one I have seen and serves nicely to date the type involved. With its use of the mark on a definitely non-imperial piece the piece should date after the closing of the imperial kiln in 1609. Those pieces without white slip where the clay luted decoration is left in unglazed clay which turns orangy-red in the firing are normally earlier.Jiajing/early Wanli.
