Description part summary
A very rare red Dingyao bowl of deep rounded shape. The inside has a yellowish white glaze of Ding colour, the outside and the base are covered with a reddish brown rust glaze (called by the Japanese 'persimmon') with slight black suffusions on the base and over the foot. The foot rim and lip are unglazed to reveal the closely grained white typical Ding body.

Red Ding is extremely rare. The glaze is an oxidized iron glaze where the piece has an over 6% iron oxide based glaze and the kiln is flooded with oxygen durinng the firing.Without oxygen being let in the glaze would have come out black. This piece shows patches of black on the base where no doubt little oxygen got to it during the firing, which demonstrate graphically the glaze chemistry and firing technique involved.
