Description part summary
Three bamboo toads carved in the round. The tongue of the big toad is fitted at the base to slots and can be moved up and down. The two smaller toads, one with a rice spray, are clambering onto the flat back of the big one. Probably intended as a brush rest for the scholar's studio.

Description inscription
Inscribed by Yuchuan Shen Dasheng with his studio seal on the bottom of the piece. It is dated to the winter of the third year of Tianqi (1623). The carver Shen Dasheng was a leading bamboo carver of the late Ming period and a student of Zhu Sansong.
