Description
Description part summary
Silver lustral bowl of shallow U-shape, chased in the main panel with a pair of mythical animals separated by a standing mandarin duck amid floral scrolls with a narrow chased border of a running doe and two geese amid floral scrolls all on a ring, punched ground. The centre of the interior with a three-clawed dragon, crab and fish in a pearl bordered medallion in repousse technique. The small crab seems a somewhat odd inclusion in the deocration but compares with a series of high quality bowls of the same shape, some of which have a small turtle replacing the crab. It seems likely that the crab here was the personal mark of the craftsman who made the piece or the personal mark of the noble who commissioned it.
